Kanpur Zoological Park
Kanpur Zoological Park, also known as Allen Forest Zoo, is a major zoological and recreational attraction in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Established in 1974, it spans roughly 76 hectares of forested terrain designed to emulate natural habitats. It is among India’s oldest and most spacious zoological parks, offering both wildlife conservation and public education in a tranquil, green environment. The zoo occupies the historic Allen Forest, first developed in the early 1900s by British industrialist George Burney Allen. Officially inaugurated on February 4, 1974, it was built following modern zoological design principles that emphasize open, moated enclosures rather than cages. This approach reduces animal stress and allows more natural behavior. The site’s rolling landscape, with hills, lakes, and dense vegetation, creates an immersive forest-like experience for visitors.
