Jajmau tila
Jajmau Tila is a historically significant mound and heritage site situated in the industrial locality of Jajmau, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Often referred to as the “Tila of Jajmau,” it is one of the oldest inhabited regions in the Kanpur area, dating back to ancient times and associated with both archaeological and religious heritage.
Archaeological excavations at Jajmau Tila have revealed remnants from periods as early as the 1st millennium BCE. The site has yielded artifacts linked to early settlement phases along the Ganga River, indicating continuous habitation through Mauryan and Gupta periods. Its elevated mound has long been a marker of Kanpur’s historical continuity.
Local traditions connect the Tila to Hindu and Islamic heritage alike. It is near several temples and dargahs, including the revered shrine of Makhdoom Shah Ala-ul-Haq, contributing to Jajmau’s identity as a site of coexistence and pilgrimage. The proximity of tanneries and temples underscores the area’s blend of industry and devotion.
