Harcourt Butler Technical University (HBTU) is a state government technical university located in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. Established in 2016 through the Government of Uttar Pradesh Act No. 11 of 2016, it evolved from the historic Harcourt Butler Technological Institute (HBTI), founded in 1921. The university is recognized as a leading residential institution emphasizing research, innovation, and industrial collaboration in engineering and applied sciences. The university’s origin traces back to the “Government Research Institute, Cawnpore” established in 1920 under Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler, then Governor of the United Provinces. It became the Government Technological Institute in 1921 and was renamed Harcourt Butler Technological Institute in 1926. Autonomous status came in 1965, followed by university status in 2016 to expand its mandate as a Center of Excellence in technical education and research. HBTU operates multiple schools: Engineering, Chemical Technology, Basic & Applied Sciences, and Humanities & Social Sciences. It offers undergraduate programs (B.Tech., BBA, B.Pharm., BS-MS), postgraduate degrees (M.Tech., MBA, MCA, M.Sc.), and Ph.D. programs across major engineering and science disciplines. Departments such as Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, and Electronics Engineering are recognized Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) centers for doctoral studies. The university has received funding through the World Bank’s TEQIP-I, II, and III initiatives to modernize infrastructure and laboratories. Faculty engage in projects sponsored by agencies like DST (India), UGC, CSIR, and DRDO, contributing to India’s R&D ecosystem.
