All Souls’ Church ( The Kanpur Memorial Church )
The All Souls’ Church, also known as The Kanpur Memorial Church, is a historic Protestant church in the Kanpur Cantonment, built in 1875 to commemorate the British soldiers and civilians who perished during the 1857 Siege of Cawnpore. It stands as one of Kanpur’s most notable colonial-era landmarks, blending architectural grandeur with solemn memorial significance.Designed by architect Walter Granville, the church exemplifies the Lombardic Gothic style. Constructed of bright red brick with multicolored stone detailing, it features a cruciform layout, pointed arches, and a large rose window on its façade. Inside, memorial tablets and epitaphs honor the fallen. The church’s craftsmanship reflects the 19th-century British aesthetic often found in colonial ecclesiastical buildings. To the east lies a tranquil memorial garden, separated by an intricately carved Gothic screen designed by Henry Yule. At its center stands the angel sculpture “Angel of Peace” by Baron Carlo Marochetti, symbolizing serenity and remembrance. Originally located at the Bibighar Well, the screen and statue were relocated here after India’s independence.
