Kanpur Memorial Church
The Kanpur Memorial Church, also known as All Souls’ Cathedral, is a historic Gothic Revival church located in the Kanpur Cantonment of Uttar Pradesh, India. Built in 1875, it commemorates the British soldiers and civilians who lost their lives during the 1857 Indian Rebellion of 1857, particularly the Siege of Cawnpore. Its architecture and memorials make it a significant landmark reflecting Kanpur’s colonial past. Commissioned to honor those who died in the 1857 uprising, the Kanpur Memorial Church was established at a time when the city (then Cawnpore) symbolized one of the rebellion’s fiercest conflicts. The memorial recalls the tragic massacre at the Kanpur Barracks and the events involving Nana Sahib, who led rebel forces during the revolt. Designed by Walter Granville, an architect with the East Bengal Railway, the church exhibits the Lombardy Gothic style characterized by red-brick walls with polychrome stone detailing and stained-glass windows. Inside, it contains memorial tablets and epitaphs dedicated to British soldiers. To the east lies the memorial garden, separated by an intricately carved Gothic screen designed by Henry Yule. At its center stands the renowned “Angel of Peace,” a marble sculpture by Baron Carlo Marochetti, representing tranquility and remembrance.
